” Reaching Out In One Song”
The Inter-Franciscan Family in Singapore – Friars, Sisters and Seculars organised a benefit concert by local artist/liturgist Chris De Silva, for a local charity Beyond Social Services, and Franciscan International, on the night of August 25, 2007, at the Parish of St. Mary of the Angels.
Chris, now a music director at St. Brendan’s Church, Los Angeles, was joined by Friar Rufino Zaragoza, ofm, a fellow composer/liturgist, Friars of St. Anthony’s Friary, Corrinne May, a recording artist together with children from Beyond Social Services, presented a night of song and music. It didn’t take long for appreciation to flow as they brought faith to song.
Beyond Social Services evolved in the 1960’s from a project founded originally by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, caring for disadvantaged families in a very old estate, called Bukit Ho Swee which was devastated by fire. Today it offers a range of programmes including residential care for children.
The work of the Franciscan family on an international level was highlighted in a clip on Franciscan Internation, a non-governmental organisation ( NGO ) with General Consultative status at the United Nations, uniting the voices of Franciscan brothers and sisters from around the world.
Sr. Molly Lim, FMM, expresses: “To the families of Beyond Social Services and the many victims that Franciscans International work with, this night was our small way of reaching out to you in one song”.
