Parish
Pastoral Council
St. Joseph's
Church was the first church in Singapore to establish a Parish Pastoral
Council. The council is the consultative body in the church. Its role
is to assist the Rector in the smooth running of Church Affairs. All
Church associations and groups are represented in the council.
RCIA
All adults seeking to join or
just desiring to learn more about the
Catholic Church and anyone wanting to update their Catholic faith are
encouraged to attend. Contact the Parish
Office for information.
Altar Servers
The community of
St. Joseph's Church has had altar servers (acolytes) since its early
days. They assist in the Mass and services and it has been the
tradition of St. Joseph Church that 12 altar servers are chosen
to represent the 12 apostles for the Washing feet ceremony on Maundy
Thursday. Boys who have received their first communion are
encouraged to join the altar servers to serve at mass.
Church Wardens
The community of
St. Joseph's Church has had wardens since its early days. Several
members have even received Papal awards for their dedicated service.
They are responsible for maintaining order and assisting participants
in the Mass and doing other services like taking up the collections.
All adults are welcome to participate as wardens are needed for all
masses and special services.
Society
of St. Vincent
de
Paul
The Conference of St. Vincent
de Paul was initiated on 20
April 1889 by the Bishop of Macau,
D.
Antonio Joaquim de Medeiros to the Board of Elecetive and Consultative
Committee of St Joseph. However, the first conference named as "St.
Joseph Conference" was only formed on 25 January 1948. On 22
August 1948, the conference was solemnly consecrated to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The conference was
aggregated to the Council General in Paris on October 24, 1948. The aim of the
association was to aid the poor and assist in other fund raising
activities.
From St Joseph conference emerged a
second conference " St Francis
Xavier's Conference" on June 23, 1949. A third conference " St. John of
God Conference" was started on June 24, 1952. In 1959, The "St.
Anthony's Conference (Ladies)" was formed and its
adoptees were families of the poor students at St.Anthony's
Convent. In 1964, the St. John conference was split up to
form the " St. Martin de Porres Conference". In 1999, all the
conferences were reverted back into the St. Joseph Conference. In 2000,
all conferences ceased and it is know only as the St. Vincent de Paul
Society.
Volunteers are always needed and are welcomed to join the St. Vincent de Paul
Society.
St.
Anthony's Bread Fund
It is the oldest
charitable organisation at St. Joseph's church. It was established in
1904 to assist the poor people of the parish. However, over the years,
its roles have been changed a little. The role of looking after the
poor families is the responsibility of the St. Vincent de Paul society
and St. Anthony's Bread Fund is responsible for looking after needy
individuals. St. Anthony's Bread Fund continues to this day.
