The
Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared six
times to three shepherd children near the town of Fatima, Portugal
between May
13th and October 13th 1917. Appearing to the children, the Blessed
Virgin told
them that She had been sent by God with a message for every man, woman
and
child living in our century. Coming at a time when civilization was
torn
asunder by war and bloody violence, She promised that Heaven would
grant peace
to the entire world if Her requests for prayer, reparation and
consecration
were heard and obeyed.
In 1935, Bishop Dom Jose Coasta Nunes who
succeeded Bishop de Azevedo
suggested that a statue of Our Lady of Fatima be placed in the niche of
the transcept beside the alatar of Our Lady of Lourdes in St Joseph's
church. Simultaneously,
devotions in honour of Our Lady of Fatima begun in the Church.
Since 1948 till to
date, Our Lady of Fatima devotion has been carried out on the 13th of
every month with a procession after the evening Mass. On the 13th of
May and the 13th of October, a special crowning ceremony of our Lady
statue is also carried out during the Mass and followed by a Candle
Light procession in the church compund.
